About Dr. Alex S. Rivlin MD, M.Sc
Dr. Alex Rivlin was born in the family of musicians.
He grew up in the atmosphere of music.
Music and life among musicians and artists have left an indelible mark on the development and emotional world of Alex.
Immediately after his birth he lived in a room with two pianos, where his father, gave piano lessons to students.
When the Drama Theatre in Chișinău was created by friends of his parents, he spent a lot of time in the theatre during rehearsals of the drama, opera and ballet. His childhood years spent in this environment affected his view of the world. In this environment the boy has developed the perception for music, voices of people, their emotions and behaviour. Special tone and the modulations of his own voice during the hypnotherapy and psychotherapy were nurtured by the environment he grew in his childhood.
The grandfather and uncles of Alex were physicians.
Savelij Yakovlevitch Rivlin was a country doctor in Nikolaev. Leonid Savelievich Rivlin, pupil and friend of I.P. Pavlov - a military doctor during the Second World War in Leningrad,.Yakov Borisovich Rivlin - a military surgeon during the war, the author of over 160 papers in the field of operative surgery.
Two unkles, military doctors, were killed during the war, while the Soviet Army was fighting Nazi Germany.
The major family trend prevailed. Alex since adolescence was attracted to medicine.
At fourteen, in his free time from school, Alex was helping at the Department of Anatomy making anatomical preparation for education of the students.
When he enrolled in the medical school-The First Medical University in Leningrad named after I.P.Pavlov, his fundamental knowledge of anatomy acquired in adolescence helped him to obtain medical degree and to take the position of the surgeon in the regional hospital - Bendery.

Guided meditation as a method of therapy in Dr. Rivlin's office.
Since 1979 Dr. Rivlin participated in the workshops in the USA by Milton Erickson, Beata Jenks, Henry Mankin and many other American specialists in Medical Hypnosis Dr. Rivlin practiced hypnotherapy and psychotherapy in Canada from then until the present time healing thousands of patients in the Emergency department of the hospitals, private surgery and from psychosomatic conditions in his own practice. His recent book “Stuck in twenty” reflects his opinion on hypnosis and neuro plasticity.
His command of hypnosis is based on the excellent musical training.
As I noticed above growing in the environment of music and theatre he acquired a special sensitivity to the sounds of the surrounding world and the peculiarities of voices and understanding the lives of his patients.
The command of his own voice is the result of growing in the environment of professional musicians, artists and dancers.
Many patients have an idea of hypnosis, as a kind of entertainment or magic,But they think about meditation as an ancient religious ritual created in Asia. Meditation in peoples mind is connected with an idea of yoga or other esoteric practices. In fact, meditation is as much Eastern as it is a Western practice. Moreover, what was practicing before and after Anton Mesmer, Abe Farria, Dr. Jaims Braid and others was nothing else then guided meditation.
Very soon after Dr. Braid coined the word "hypnosis" (in 1841) he wanted to take it back, but it was too late, because it became a word, which meant many things, depending on the person who uses it.
I found that the term "guided meditation" is much more relevant to my practice than the term "hypnosis".
There is a very sound reason for that. From the word hypnosis the patient expects (each on it's own way) a magic divination which like a stroke of lightning will implant a new pattern of behavior, will eliminate a habit, or even totally change the personality of a patient. The patient expects someone to do something for him/her totally without self participation. This is not what Dr. Jaims Braid was thinking or writhing about his term "hypnosis". Therefore, this word confuses the meaning of the therapy.
Unlike hypnosis, guided meditation involves combined efforts of the patient and the doctor and in fact is much more superior than hypnosis in it's results.
This method of therapy is used to treat a wide range of diseases and conditions. The nervous system penetrates everywhere within the organism. By influencing the nervous system, the muscles, vessels, heart, endocrine system and immunity of the organism could be affected. In the hands of a practicing physician, M.D.,versed in modern medicine (medicine, blood tests, functional studies) guided meditation as a method of therapy which has a great strength.
As his assistant I often amazed at how simple conversation uttered by his voice calms, heals and reduces pain in his patients.
Any conversation by Dr.Alex Rivlin is a medical hypnotherapy or a psychotherapy session.
